One of the most embarrassing discovery calls I’ve ever had actually taught me one of the best lessons in consulting.

A client reached out to me about helping build out a side business he was working on.

We had the initial meeting.
I gathered my notes.
Understood the direction.
Then I went off to do my research before the discovery presentation.

At the time, I was really trying to impress clients with how deep I could go into understanding their business.

So I researched everything tied to his email.

Company information.
Market positioning.
Operational opportunities.

I built out the presentation, organized the slides, and honestly felt pretty good going into the call.

So the discovery meeting starts.

I share my screen confidently and begin presenting.

About 20 seconds in, the client stops me and says:

“…this isn’t my business.”

I pause for a second and ask:
“What do you mean?”

He goes:
“That’s my family’s company. I just work there.”

Man…

I felt my soul leave my body 😂

Somehow during my research, I connected him to his family’s business and built the ENTIRE presentation around the wrong company.

And the worst part?

The recommendations technically still made sense.

Which somehow made the situation even more awkward.

Looking back, I probably sounded like some overcommitted internet investigator trying to explain his family’s operations to him.

Meanwhile this guy just wanted help with a side project.

I honestly think I lost the client the second that logo hit the screen.

But that moment taught me something important.

Discovery is not about seeing how much information you can find.

It’s about understanding the actual problem the client wants solved.

Ever since then, I’ve become much more intentional during discovery.

Less assumptions.
More clarity.
More focus.

Funny enough, one of my most embarrassing calls probably made me much better at what I do today.
