This is why I hate marketing.

Funny enough, marketing is actually where I started.

And if you know me, you know I can't casually learn something.

If I'm going to do something, I want to understand the hell out of it.

So I went all in.

Books. Courses. Content. Advertising. Psychology. Copywriting.

I wanted to understand everything.

And I got pretty good at it.

But eventually something started bothering me.

I didn't want my value to come from convincing someone to buy something.

Especially something they might not even need.

I wanted to be closer to the actual value being created.

I wanted to build something.

Fix something.

Make a business genuinely better because I was there.

The other thing that drove me crazy about marketing was the game itself.

Algorithms change.

Platforms change.

What worked six months ago suddenly stops working.

You're constantly fighting for attention on someone else's platform.

I wanted a craft I could compound.

Something where five years of experience actually made me more dangerous than one year of experience.

That's eventually what led me into CRMs and business systems.

And something clicked.

I wasn't trying to convince people a business was better anymore.

I could actually help make the business better.

That felt completely different.

Ironically, all those years studying marketing weren't wasted.

I use that knowledge constantly today.

I just eventually realized I wanted to be on the side that creates the value, not the side responsible for convincing people the value exists.

I'm currently working alongside an AI agency on a project.

And I'm watching something happen in real time that I think we're going to see A LOT more of.

AI has allowed an entry-level developer to take on what is really a senior-level architecture problem.

And technically...

they can build it.

That's the crazy part.

But maintaining it is a completely different story.

The best way I can describe what I'm watching is a kid trying to stack slippery blocks.

One issue appears.

They fix it.

Move to the next issue.

Then one of the previous blocks falls.

They fix that again.

Another block falls somewhere else.

And it just keeps going.

Not because AI can't write the code.

It can.

The problem is that experience teaches you to recognize problems you haven't encountered yet.

Architecture.

Dependencies.

Failure points.

Edge cases.

The things an entry-level developer doesn't even know they should be looking for.

I'm using AI on my side of the exact same project.

The difference is I'm using it to accelerate work I already knew how to do.

That's where I think people are misunderstanding AI.

AI can dramatically increase what you're capable of building.

But it can also dramatically increase the complexity you're capable of creating.

And if you don't have the experience to recognize that complexity...

you can vibe-code yourself into one hell of a mess.

A prospect once came to me with an exciting idea.

"We want to build this internally first...

then once it's working, we'll offer it as a service."

On the surface, it sounded like a great opportunity.

But the more I thought about it, the more one question kept coming back to me.

What happens if I'm wrong?

Think about it.

Imagine opening a plumbing company before you've even built the plumbing shop.

Now the entire business is waiting on one plumber to finish building everything before the company can even open its doors.

That's an incredible amount of pressure to put on one person.

And honestly...

I see this more often than people realize.

Founders fall in love with an idea and assume the right hire will bring the business to life.

But businesses shouldn't depend on one person.

They should be designed so knowledge, decisions, and execution can eventually live beyond any one individual.

Don't get me wrong, I love helping people build businesses.

That's literally what I do.

But I never want a client believing *I'm* the business.

I want to build a business that can stand on its own long after I'm gone.

To me...

that's what good architecture really looks like.

One of the biggest misconceptions in business is that growth problems are marketing problems.

I used to think that too.

"If I could just get more leads..."

"If I could just get more traffic..."

"If I could just get more people through the door..."

But after working with dozens of businesses, I started noticing something.

Some companies had incredible marketing...

and were barely surviving.

Others had average marketing...

and were quietly printing money.

That didn't make sense.

Until I realized they weren't playing the same game.

One business was optimizing for leads.

The other was optimizing for what happened **after** the lead arrived.

That's a completely different business.

That realization stuck with me for years.

Whenever I have an idea that feels important, I don't tell myself, "I'll remember it later."

I write it down and schedule it.

Today, one of those tasks came up.

When I saw it, I honestly thought...

"Why did I even schedule this?"

It felt like a waste of time.

But I trusted the version of me that created the task.

So I did it anyway.

Halfway through, I remembered exactly why it mattered.

It ended up being one of those things that doesn't feel valuable until it's done.

That's when I realized something.

Sometimes your past self has more clarity than your present self.

Business is a coin.
On one side: the customer experience.
On the other: operational complexity.
And every business chooses how to tilt that coin.
The easier you make it for your customers, the more complexity your backend has to absorb.
The easier you make it on your operations, the more friction your customers feel.
Amazon became dominant by taking on extreme backend complexity solving problems others couldn’t, to make the front-end experience effortless.
Business is not just marketing or delivery. It’s mastering that tension between customer ease and operational scalability.
Now add AI to the mix and you unlock the ability to handle more complexity than ever. That’s the edge.

A few years ago, a friend asked me what he should focus on.

Without hesitation, I told him: chatbots and AI.

At the time, ManyChat was just entering the scene.
AI felt far away. Almost theoretical.

But I wasn’t betting on hype.
I was watching the knowledge gap.

Whenever the gap between the expert and the beginner is massive… there’s opportunity.

Think about the early days of the internet.

Building a website required real technical skill.
You needed to understand servers, infrastructure, code.
Because of that, websites were expensive.

Then software came along and bridged the gap.

Suddenly, you didn’t need to understand the internet.
You just needed to understand the interface.

The knowledge barrier collapsed.
And the market exploded.

That’s what I was seeing with AI.

Tools were starting to emerge that made complex systems accessible.
Google was experimenting. Platforms were simplifying.
ChatGPT wasn’t even public yet—but the direction was obvious.

Whenever software compresses the distance between “I don’t know” and “I can build this,” industries change.

And I still see it that way today.

If someone asked me now what field to go into, I wouldn’t say marketing.

I’d say system efficiencies.

Because AI is shrinking the entry barrier in knowledge.

What used to take years to understand…
can now be guided, accelerated, and executed with the right systems.

The real leverage isn’t in shouting louder.

It’s in building smarter systems that multiply capability.

That gap between expert and beginner?

It’s closing fast.

And the people who understand how to design systems inside that shift…
will win.
